Making a sand casting mold

Today we are going to show you how to design some cool metal items without melting anything using these sand casting! A sand castings mold is like a sandbox that you build to pour hot metal into. Then just close the mold and wait until the metal is cold to remove your object from there. It's like baking a cake, but not with dough, with metal!

Gather Your Sand: To start, you will have to gather your sand. Types of sand you can use : Any type, but it is mandatory that the iron casting sand must be clean and dry. You will either have a sandy beach or a sandbox. Get your other containers ie a bucket, or a wheelbarrow and pour the sand into it. This LF is where you will make your negative mould.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Mold

Design Your Pattern: First of all, you are going to need a pattern. This LF can consist of anything from some thing you draw on paper and then reduce out in cardboard, foam or wood. Alternatively, you may want to find some objects lying around your house (e. g. a seashell or toy car) which you can simply trace as your pattern. This pattern is significant because it defines the shape of a sand mold.

Push the Pattern: After you have your pattern all set, it is time to push this in the massive. You will then place your pattern over the sand and gently press it down so that it is nice and level. This grey iron casting will hold the pattern of what you drew. Carefully remove the pattern from the sand after pressing. You will notice some sort of shape in the sand.
