sand casting iron

Ever wonder where our everyday stuff comes from? Its an interesting concept to think about! What is Sand Casting One of the oldest and most interesting methods to make items out there is called sand casting. It's been used for thousands of years, and allows us to make tough iron items that can serve important purposes in our lives.

So, what is sand casting? There is an iron (or other liquid metal) mix and mold it into sand. In order to do this, they use a fully formed model of the final part we want to produce around which sand is shaped. The woven pattern can be of wood, plastic or metal. When the liquid iron is poured into the mold and has cooled down, we simply remove our mould to see an item that looks like a rectangle for instance.

Exploring the process of sand casting iron for modern applications

Once the pattern is done then it's embedded into sand. A binder - a special blend of materials that helps to keep the sand together for when iron is poured into the mold. This is incredibly important because it holds the mold in place. Once the sand mold has hardened, liquid iron is carefully poured into it to cool. After the iron cools and hardens, the mold is opened; then can be used as a finished product.

One of the primary reasons that sand casting is still employed today is because it produces incredibly durable products. Sandcasting generaly produces ductile iron as one form of the metal. And since this kind of iron is used for many applications, like pipe fittings and engine blocks, it has long been an industry standard. Ductile iron is used for such properties as strength and impact resistance applications, ideal qualities in heavy machinery which require durable parts.
